Joe Thomson, CPA


A Mississippi native, Joe attended The University of Mississippi, graduating cum laude with a bachelor in business administration (majoring in accounting) in 1974, and a juris doctor in 1978. Joe completed requirements to become a certified public accountant in 1976; in 1978, he moved to Houston and joined the firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co.

Joe joined Larry Maddox in 1985 to start Maddox Thomson & Associates, P.C. With the founding of Horizon Advisors in 1999, Joe and Larry added investment planning/management services to their financial planning services.

Joe’s focus at Maddox, Thomson & Associates and Horizon Advisors is client relationships, business development, and income and estate tax planning.

Married to the former Anne Sewell, Joe has three sons who were born in Houston. Joe is an active member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, having served on its vestry and as Junior Warden. Joe is also a member of the Houston Country Club. In the past, Joe served in various capacities on the board of directors, as an officer, and as a coach in the Post Oak Pony and Little Leagues.
